An Ordinary Man
Nigel Ackland is the pioneering pilot for the bebionic V3 prosthetic hand. After having an accident at work which severely crushed his right forearm he chose to have a trans-radial (below elbow) amputation. Five years after this procedure, and having used a number of passive prosthetics, he became the World’s first long term tester of the Bebionic V3, which he describes as a “Life Changer”.
In 2013 Russian Businessman Dmitry Itskov asked Nigel to speak at the launch event for his 2045 Initiative in New York. Since then Nigel has been internationally recognised as one of the most passionate advocates for access to prosthetics for amputees. He has been raising awareness of high tech prosthetics by speaking at Universities in the UK and at events throughout Europe and across the World. These include The Singularity University’s Conferences, WIRED Health, TEDx Athens & New Scientist Live. He has become a regular speaker at events in Russia. He has helped other amputees raise funds to purchase their own prosthetics, and has taken part in commercials for Microsoft, IBM, Engie, BMW and the British Paralympics.
